Candles Are Always On Trend

I fell in love tonight with the candle flicker dancing in the moonlight on my old wood table.”

I can say with absolute certainty that decorating with candles will never, ever, ever go out of style. How many things can you say that about? There’s something quite entrancing and cocooning about the warm glow and wafting scent of a wax-filled vessel. It’s luxurious and cozy, and in my opinion, an absolute must when styling your home. Here are my top four favorite ways to integrate candles into your decor.

1.) Mix real with fake. I like candles everywhere, but I also want my home to feel safe. So certain areas (especially a room where they will be unattended), I will use battery-operated flicker candles and tea lights. They look so real and provide the same ambiance.

2.) If you’re entertaining, and the bathroom that will be used has a tub in it, fill the tub with a few inches of water, and place a handful of floating candles in the water. (Make sure all towels and shower curtains are far away!) The room literally glows, and it’s a unique decorating touch that every guest will comment on.

3.) I group candles into two categories: affordable candles that you burn on the stove daily to give your home a pleasant overall smell; and “nice” candles that you burn on special occasions and have on display. These “nice” candles look beautiful on coffee tables and side tables when paired with items such as books, greenery, decorative bowls, items of curiosity, etc. When styling your table, remember the rule of “decorating in threes,” and make sure a candle is one of the three.

4.) Lighting is everything, and don’t forget about your hallways! Having a candle flickering in a dark hallway (and here is where I use the faux version for safety), feels very primitive and alluring. Want to take it to the next level? Check out your local antique store for a vintage metal swing arm sconce. It’s the perfect perch for a candle, and will cast the glow up and fill the space. It’s a game changer!

If you’re looking to purchase some “nice” candles, look no further than Milford! Inside Living Style on 80 Broad Street has a wonderful selection of candles, with different style vessels and scents. The ladies at SEANOE (www.shopseanoevil.com) sell PIRETTE - which is THE quintessential beach candle, with the most intoxicating scent. It’s a favorite among my clients (and the name makes me smile). Lastly, the absolute best beeswax candles in town are curated with love by local beekeeper Ralph Harrison. Each one is a true labor of love and gives the added benefit of actually neutralizing pollutants in your home and cleaning the air. Plus, beeswax candles burn brighter, cleaner and 2-5 times longer than other candles…what’s not to love? (To get your hands on one of these gems, you can reach out to Ralph via email at harrisonrw@aol.com.)
